Introduction to Leadership Skills and CPD Workshop

This session will provide an overview of the leadership in Cancer Education series. We will examine and discuss the components necessary for effective scholarship in cancer education. We will discuss recent evidence that identifies strategies that will ensure scholarship program effectiveness in terms of likely change in practice. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss how their current programs may benefit from implementing recommended strategies. This session will be highly interactive.

Webinar 2 – February 15, 2023

Community Engagement by Kathleen Heneghan

A critical strategy for reducing the burden of cancer in communities is to create partnerships and network with community organizations. These partnerships allow to provide cancer education and access to cancer screenings, treatment and research. Through these community partnerships, we build relationships that create opportunities for alliances and collaborations between researchers and our communities to conduct community-engaged research that increases access to cancer prevention and screenings and test interventions to reduce cancer risk, reduce mortality, increase survival and improve quality of life.

Leadership Styles to Help you Achieve the Success in Cancer Education by Filipe Santos Silva

Effective leaders in healthcare settings create a motivating work environment, initiate changes in practice, and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration to advance patient-centered care. Health professionals in cancer education need leadership development to meet the continued rise in cancer cases and to keep up with the rapid biomedical and technological advances in global cancer care. In addition, leadership development in cancer education supports interprofessional collaboration, optimizes patient engagement, and provides mentorship opportunities necessary for career advancement and skill development. This webinar will also discuss different leadership styles which may help cancer education leaders in enhancing their leadership potential and initiatives.

Risk Assessment and Communication by Jacob de Vries & Jan Oosterwijk

Effective communication is central to the clinician-patient encounter. Communication skills training (CST) has become one vehicle to build skills that optimally advance the clinical agenda, alongside promoting professionalism and excellence of care. Good communication skills have been linked to higher patient satisfaction, greater patient adherence to treatment, better patient health outcomes, fewer physician malpractice claims, reduced patient anxiety, increased recall, and improved understanding.1 This webinar will discuss the importance of risk assessment and communication in oncology with increasing incidence/ increasing diagnostic/treatment options and decreasing budgets.

Cultural Racial Diversity and Spirituality in Cancer Education by Gilad Amiel

Diversity in the oncology team membership is critical for providing quality and comprehensive oncology care that serves the whole patient. “Diversity refers to differences between individuals on any attribute that may lead to the perception that another person is different from self.” Social category diversity centers on differences in characteristics such as sex, age and ethnicity. This webinar will discuss cultural and professional and disciplinary diversity in the oncology team based on experience from Rambam Hospital in Haifa, Israel.

Global cancer education and International Collaboration by Jamal Khadar

This webinar will highlight how leadership can help support cancer organizations to achieve “an influential cancer community with the skills, knowledge, and networks to achieve effective cancer prevention and control”. With leadership cancer organizations can do a better job tomorrow than they already do today. This is demonstrated by the unique work of Dr. Khadar, who has utilized the expertise from UICC members and delivers services and products to a UICC membership base that maximizes their strengths and improves their effectiveness in their chosen field of operation within their own country.

Publishing your work in peer review journals by Maria Bishop

This webinar will discuss importance of publishing scholarship and research in cancer education in the peer review journals. Maria Bishop, editor in chief for the Journal of Cancer Education (the official Journal of the American Association for Cancer Education (AACE) and the European Association for Cancer Education (EACE) will discuss her experiences as editor in chief and provide tips on how to publish in a journal, the importance of choosing an appropriate journal to publish. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their leadership projects with Q&A on how to get started publishing your article.

Webinar 6 – June 14, 2023

Dynamic Leadership in the Challenging Digital Age by David Wiljer

International collaborations are one of the cornerstones in cancer education. They enable us to improve how we meet major health challenges through developing reciprocal relationships and sharing learnings with others around the world. Webinar 2 will provide a perspective on global cancer education and international collaboration leadership through networking among organization such as American Association for Cancer Education (AACE), European Association for Cancer Education (EACE) and International Union against Cancer (UICC). Discussions on being a leader in this technological age and leading with digital compassion.
